Atlantic Scrunchie Crochet Pattern
By Jocelyn | Free Crochet Pattern
There is something deeply satisfying about making something you can actually wear, and a scrunchie is the fastest path from yarn to finished object I know of. I designed the Atlantic Scrunchie as a quick, colourful companion to the dishcloth: same alternating stitch rhythm, same beginner-friendly construction, but with a playful shell ruffle that makes it feel a little bit fancy.
I used Caron Cotton Cupcakes in Gumdrop and Tutti Fruity because the names alone make me happy. These little cakes have the most cheerful colour gradients, perfect for a scrunchie, where every round is a tiny canvas. Any DK or light worsted cotton will work here. You just need a small amount, so this is a great stash-busting project too.
What You'll Need
- ~50 yards DK or light worsted cotton yarn
- Caron Cotton Cupcakes or similar (DK weight)
- 5.0mm hook (H/8)
- 1 regular hair elastic
- Yarn needle
- Scissors

Skill Level: Beginner
Abbreviations: ch=chain, sc=single crochet, hdc=half double crochet, sl st=slip stitch, sp=space

The scrunchie is worked entirely in the round, right over a regular hair elastic. Hold the elastic with your non-dominant hand and work all stitches around it to encase it completely.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join.
Round 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Sl st to join.
Round 4: Ch 1, *sc in next st, skip 1 st, ch 2; rep from * around. Sl st to join.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch-2 sp around. Sl st to join.
Round 6 (Shell Ruffle): *Sl st in next st, skip 1 st, 5 hdc in next st, skip 1 st; rep from * around. Sl st to join. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends securely.
